Festival overview

Guru Gobind Singh Ji Jayanti (Prakash Purab) celebrates the birth of the tenth and final human Sikh Guru, the founder of the Khalsa and the Guru who conferred eternal Guruship on the Guru Granth Sahib. A warrior, poet and spiritual master, he is remembered for his immense sacrifice in defence of righteousness and religious freedom.

History & origin

Born in 1666 at Patna Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa at Vaisakhi 1699. He gave his father (Guru Tegh Bahadur), his four sons (the Sahibzade), his mother and countless Sikhs to the cause of justice. Before passing in 1708, he ended the line of human Gurus, declaring the Guru Granth Sahib the eternal Guru.

Spiritual significance

Guru Gobind Singh Ji modelled the saint-soldier: total devotion to God united with fearless defence of the weak. His life teaches that faith without courage, and courage without faith, are both incomplete.

Religious significance

Celebrated with Akhand Path, nagar kirtan, kirtan-darbar and langar. Patna Sahib and Anandpur Sahib see especially grand observances.
