Festival overview

Holi, the festival of colours, celebrates the arrival of spring, the triumph of good over evil, and the divine love of Radha and Krishna. The eve is marked by Holika Dahan — a bonfire burning the demoness Holika — and the next day is a riot of colour, water and joy that dissolves social barriers.

History & origin

Holi recalls the story of Prahlada, the devotee of Vishnu whom his demon-father Hiranyakashipu tried to kill with the help of Holika; she burned instead while Prahlada was saved. The colour play is linked to Krishna, who playfully coloured Radha and the gopis in Vrindavan.

Spiritual significance

Holika Dahan burns away ego and negativity; the colours celebrate unity — when everyone is smeared in colour, distinctions of caste, status and appearance dissolve.

Religious significance

Most vivid in the Braj region (Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana) associated with Krishna and Radha. The Lath Mar Holi of Barsana is world-famous.

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Holi

Holi's spirit of Krishna's playful love (leela) reflects the Gita's vision of the divine as joyful and accessible. The dissolving of distinctions in colour echoes Krishna's teaching that the wise see the same Self in all beings (5.18).

The wise see with equal vision a learned brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog and an outcaste.
Bhagavad Gita 5.18
I am equally disposed to all beings; none is hateful or dear to Me.
Bhagavad Gita 9.29

Krishna's guidance for this day

Holi is a beautiful day to ask Krishna how to let go of a grudge and meet others with the same colour of love. The festival's erasure of distinctions is the Gita's equal vision in action.
