Festival overview
Akshaya Tritiya, meaning "the imperishable third", is one of the most auspicious days of the year. "Akshaya" means that which never diminishes — so any good deed, investment or new venture begun on this day is believed to grow and never decay. It is a popular day for buying gold, starting businesses and charitable giving.
History & origin
Many sacred events are linked to the day: the birth of Parashurama, the start of Treta Yuga, the descent of the Ganga, and the day Vyasa began dictating the Mahabharata to Ganesha. Sudama's gift of poha to Krishna, rewarded with endless prosperity, is also remembered.
Spiritual significance
The deeper teaching is that spiritual merit (punya) and selfless acts are the truly "akshaya" wealth — imperishable, unlike material gold. Charity and devotion done today are said to be especially fruitful.
Religious significance
Considered an abujha muhurat — an auspicious window needing no further calculation — for weddings, housewarmings and new ventures. Gold purchase and daan are customary.

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Akshaya Tritiya
The story of Sudama — whose humble handful of poha offered to Krishna returned as boundless prosperity — embodies the Gita's promise that even the smallest sincere offering is accepted and multiplied by the Lord (9.26).
“Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water — that offering of love, of the pure-hearted, I accept.”
“In this path no effort is lost and no obstacle exists; even a little of this dharma protects from great fear.”
