Festival overview
Guru Purnima honours the guru — the spiritual teacher who dispels darkness. Falling on the full moon of Ashadha, it is also Vyasa Purnima, celebrating Sage Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas and authored the Mahabharata (which contains the Bhagavad Gita). It is a day to express gratitude to all who have taught and guided us.
History & origin
Vyasa is revered as the adi-guru, the first teacher who organised Vedic knowledge for humanity. The day also marks, in the yogic tradition, Shiva — the Adiyogi (the first yogi) — becoming the Adi Guru, the first guru, by transmitting yoga to the Saptarishis. Disciples across traditions honour their gurus on this full moon.
Spiritual significance
The word guru means "remover of darkness" (gu = darkness, ru = remover). Guru Purnima recognises that wisdom is transmitted through living teachers, and that gratitude is the proper response to being taught.
Religious significance
Observed by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains; disciples offer puja and seva to their gurus and renew their commitment to practice.
Rituals & how it is observed

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Guru Purnima
The Gita itself is the record of the ultimate guru-disciple dialogue: Krishna teaching Arjuna. Krishna instructs Arjuna to seek knowledge by approaching a teacher with humility and service (4.34). Guru Purnima is, in a sense, a celebration of the very relationship the Gita models.
“Learn this by humble reverence, by inquiry and by service; the wise who have seen the truth will teach you knowledge.”
“I am Your disciple; instruct me, who has taken refuge in You.”
