Purnima, the full-moon day, occurs once each lunar month and is considered highly auspicious. Many devotees fast, perform Satyanarayan Puja, take holy dips and give charity. Several major festivals fall on Purnima — Guru Purnima, Hanuman Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, Sharad Purnima and Kartik Purnima among them.

Fasting guidelines
A Purnima fast is commonly kept and broken after moon-sighting and puja; many eat only fruits and milk.
