Bhai Dooj, falling on the day after Govardhan Puja (three days after Diwali), celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life; brothers offer gifts and protection. It closes the five-day Diwali festival on a note of family love.
History & origin
The festival recalls Yama, the god of death, visiting his sister Yamuna, who welcomed him with a tilak and a meal; Yama blessed that any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day would be granted long life.

Like Raksha Bandhan, Bhai Dooj sanctifies the sibling relationship and the duty of mutual care that binds a family.
