Festival overview
Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, marks the victory of good over evil. It celebrates both Lord Rama's defeat of the ten-headed demon king Ravana and Goddess Durga's slaying of Mahishasura. Effigies of Ravana are burned across India, and the festival closes the nine nights of Navratri.
History & origin
On this tenth day, Rama killed Ravana to rescue Sita, and Durga completed her nine-day battle against Mahishasura. Both stories converge on a single truth: however mighty, adharma is ultimately destroyed.
Spiritual significance
The burning of Ravana's effigy — with its ten heads representing ego, greed, lust, anger and other vices — is a call to burn away our own inner evils.
Religious significance
Celebrated as Vijayadashami across India, with Ramlila enactments, Ravana Dahan, and the immersion of Durga idols (Vijaya Dashami in Bengal). It is considered an auspicious day to begin new ventures.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Watch or perform Ramlila culminating in Ravana Dahan
- Worship weapons and tools (Ayudha Puja / Shastra Puja)
- Begin new learning or ventures — the day is highly auspicious
✅ Do
- Reflect on which inner "head" of Ravana to release
- Begin something new and good
- Seek blessings of elders
🚫 Avoid
- Avoid starting quarrels on an auspicious day
- Avoid procrastinating — it is a day for beginnings
Bhagavad Gita teachings for Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
Dussehra dramatises the Gita's teaching that the divine descends to destroy adharma (4.8). Krishna also catalogues the "demonic" qualities — pride, arrogance, anger, harshness, ignorance (16.4) — that Ravana embodies and that Dussehra calls us to burn.
“To protect the good and destroy the wicked, and to re-establish dharma, I am born age after age.”
“Three are the gates to this hell, destroying the self: lust, anger and greed; therefore one should abandon these three.”
