Festival overview
Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the hero of the Ramayana. Born at noon in Ayodhya, Rama is revered as Maryada Purushottam — the perfect man, the embodiment of righteousness, duty and ideal conduct. The day falls on the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri.
History & origin
Rama was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya of Ayodhya. His life — exile, the rescue of Sita, and the defeat of Ravana — is told in Valmiki's Ramayana and Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, and stands as the model of dharmic living through hardship.
Spiritual significance
Rama teaches that dharma is upheld not in comfort but in difficulty. Ram Navami invites devotees to embody Rama's values — truthfulness, duty, devotion and equanimity — in their own trials.
Religious significance
The day is marked by recitations of the Ramayana, bhajan-kirtan, the birth celebration of Rama at noon, and processions. It is especially significant in Ayodhya and across North India.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Recite the Ramayana or Ramcharitmanas
- Celebrate Rama's birth at midday with aarti

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Ram Navami
Rama and Krishna are both avatars of Vishnu, and Rama's life dramatises the Gita's central teaching: do your duty (svadharma) without attachment to comfort or outcome. Rama renounces a kingdom to keep his father's word — pure nishkama karma.
“Whatever a great person does, others follow; the standard they set, the world pursues.”
“You have a right to your action alone, never to its fruits; let not the fruits be your motive.”
Krishna's guidance for this day
Ask Krishna how to hold to what is right when it costs you comfort. Rama's example and the Gita's teaching on duty meet exactly here: act rightly, release the outcome.
Ask Krishna
Bring a real question about Ram Navami — its meaning for your life, what to focus on spiritually, what Krishna teaches through it — and receive calm, verse-backed guidance.
