Festival overview
Navratri, "nine nights", honours the Divine Mother in her nine forms (Navadurga). Sharad Navratri, the most celebrated, falls in autumn and culminates in Dussehra. Days of fasting, devotion, garba and dandiya celebrate the goddess's victory over the buffalo-demon Mahishasura — the triumph of the sacred feminine over ego and evil.
History & origin
Navratri commemorates Goddess Durga's nine-day battle with Mahishasura, whom she slew on the tenth day (Vijayadashami). Each of the nine nights is dedicated to one form of the goddess, from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri.
Spiritual significance
The nine nights map an inner journey: the first three invoke Durga to destroy impurities, the next three invoke Lakshmi for inner wealth, and the last three invoke Saraswati for wisdom. It is a structured spiritual cleansing.
Religious significance
Observed pan-India in many forms — garba and dandiya in Gujarat, Durga Puja in Bengal, Golu displays in the South, and Ramlila in the North leading to Dussehra.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Install a kalash (ghatasthapana) on day one
- Worship one form of Durga each of the nine days
- Keep fasts; many eat only phalahar (fruits, sabudana, kuttu)
- Perform garba and dandiya in the evenings
✅ Do
- Keep the home and altar clean
- Worship the goddess daily with sincerity
- Channel the festive energy into devotion, not just celebration
🚫 Avoid
- Avoid grains, onion and garlic if fasting
- Avoid alcohol and non-vegetarian food
- Avoid cutting hair or nails (traditional observance)
Fasting guidelines
Many fast all nine days on phalahar — fruits, milk, sabudana, kuttu (buckwheat), singhara flour and sendha namak; grains, onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food are avoided.
Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.
Bhagavad Gita teachings for Navratri (Sharad)
The Gita honours the Divine in feminine form too — Krishna says "of feminine qualities I am fame, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience" (10.34). Navratri's inner battle against ego mirrors the Gita's call to conquer the lower self.
“Among feminine qualities I am fame, fortune, fine speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and forgiveness.”
“Let one lift oneself by oneself; let one not degrade oneself, for the self alone is one's friend and one's enemy.”
Krishna's guidance for this day
Navratri is a powerful window to ask Krishna how to conquer an inner "demon" — anger, fear, craving. The Gita's teaching that we are our own best friend or worst enemy (6.5) is the heart of Navratri sadhana.
