Festival overview
Durga Ashtami, or Maha Ashtami, is the eighth and one of the most powerful days of Sharad Navratri. It honours Mahagauri and the warrior aspect of Durga who battled Mahishasura. In Bengal, this is the heart of Durga Puja; elsewhere, Kanya Pujan (worship of young girls as the goddess) is performed.
History & origin
On Ashtami and the following Navami, Durga is said to have fought her fiercest battle against Mahishasura. The day is marked by Sandhi Puja at the juncture of Ashtami and Navami.
Spiritual significance
The day celebrates shakti — the divine power that destroys evil. Kanya Pujan honours the goddess present in every girl, teaching reverence for the feminine divine.
Religious significance
Central to Durga Puja in Bengal; widely observed with fasting, Kanya Pujan and Sandhi Puja across India.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Perform Kanya Pujan — feed and honour young girls
- Offer Sandhi Puja at the Ashtami-Navami juncture
- Keep the Navratri fast
✅ Do
- Honour young girls as forms of the goddess
- Complete the Navratri observance with devotion
🚫 Avoid
- Avoid disrespect to women on a day honouring the divine feminine
- Avoid grains if fasting
Fasting guidelines
Phalahar fast as during Navratri; many break the fast after Kanya Pujan.
Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.
Bhagavad Gita teachings for Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami)
The fierce grace of Durga reflects the Gita's teaching that the divine power destroys adharma. Krishna's reminder that we must conquer the lower self by the higher self (6.5–6) is the inner Mahishasura-mardini.
“For one who has conquered the self, the self is a friend; but for one who has not, the very self acts as an enemy.”
“Among feminine qualities I am fame, fortune, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and forgiveness.”
