Festival overview
Karwa Chauth is a one-day fast traditionally kept by married women for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands. Observed from sunrise to moonrise without food or water, it is a festival of love, devotion and togetherness, ending with the sighting of the moon and the breaking of the fast.
History & origin
The festival's legends — of Queen Veeravati and of Savitri who won back her husband's life from Yama — celebrate the power of a devoted wife's sankalp. Over time it has become a broader celebration of marital love.
Spiritual significance
The fast is an act of tapasya (austerity) offered out of love. Increasingly, couples observe it together, reframing it as mutual devotion rather than a one-sided observance.
Religious significance
Most popular in North India — Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, Haryana. Women gather for the morning sargi, dress in finery, and break the fast together at moonrise.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Eat sargi before dawn
- Keep a nirjala fast all day
- Listen to the Karwa Chauth katha in the evening
- Break the fast after sighting the moon through a sieve
✅ Do
- Eat a nourishing sargi before dawn
- Keep the day in devotion and rest
- Break the fast gently after moonrise
🚫 Avoid
- Avoid over-exertion during the waterless fast
- Those with health conditions should consult a doctor first
Fasting guidelines
A strict nirjala (no food or water) fast from before sunrise until moonrise, broken after viewing the moon and the husband's hands.
Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.
Bhagavad Gita teachings for Karwa Chauth
The Gita honours acts of love and disciplined austerity offered selflessly. Karwa Chauth's fast, when done with love rather than fear, becomes the sattvic tapas the Gita praises (17.14–16) — austerity of body, speech and mind offered without craving for reward.
“Serenity of mind, gentleness, silence, self-restraint and purity of heart — this is called the austerity of the mind.”
“One who is friendly and compassionate to all, free from possessiveness and ego — that devotee is dear to Me.”
Krishna's guidance for this day
