Festival overview
Sankashti Chaturthi is a monthly fast devoted to Lord Ganesha, observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the dark fortnight. "Sankashti" means deliverance from difficulties — the vrat is kept to remove obstacles and is broken only after sighting the moon at night. The Chaturthi in the bright fortnight is called Vinayaka Chaturthi.
History & origin
Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is worshipped on each Chaturthi. The most important Sankashti is Angarki Chaturthi, when it falls on a Tuesday, considered especially powerful.
Spiritual significance
The vrat cultivates patience and faith — fasting through the day and waiting for the moonrise teaches surrender, while invoking Ganesha to clear the path ahead.
Religious significance
Especially popular in Maharashtra and South India; devotees recite the Ganesha Atharvashirsha and the Sankashti vrat katha.
Rituals & how it is observed
- Fast through the day for Ganesha
- Worship Ganesha in the evening; recite the vrat katha
- Break the fast after sighting the moon
✅ Do
- Invoke Ganesha to remove a specific obstacle
- Offer modak and durva grass
- Break the fast only after moon-sighting
🚫 Avoid
- Avoid grains if fasting
- Avoid impatience — the moonrise wait is part of the vrat
Fasting guidelines
A day fast (often phalahar) is broken after moonrise and evening Ganesha worship.
Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.
Bhagavad Gita teachings for Sankashti Chaturthi
Invoking Ganesha to remove obstacles pairs naturally with the Gita's teaching to act and then surrender the outcome (2.47, 18.66). The patience of waiting for moonrise is itself a small practice of the equanimity the Gita prizes.
“Abandon all varieties of dharma and surrender unto Me alone; I shall free you from all sins, do not fear.”
“Established in yoga, perform your actions, abandoning attachment and remaining even-minded in success and failure.”
