Festival overview

Pradosh Vrat is observed on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of each lunar fortnight, twice a month, in devotion to Lord Shiva. The worship is performed in the pradosh kaal — the auspicious twilight just after sunset. It is believed that worshipping Shiva at this hour fulfils wishes and removes sins.

History & origin

The Skanda Purana relates that during the twilight of Trayodashi, Shiva dances joyfully between the horns of Nandi, and the gods worship him. Pradosh worship at this hour is thus especially fruitful.

Spiritual significance

Pradosh teaches the value of sacred timing and twilight contemplation — pausing at the day's threshold to turn inward toward Shiva, the still centre of consciousness.

Religious significance

Each Pradosh has a name by weekday (Som Pradosh on Monday is most auspicious). It is observed across Shaiva traditions with abhishek and fasting.

Rituals & how it is observed

  • Fast through the day, breaking it after pradosh-kaal worship
  • Offer water and bilva leaves to the Shiva lingam at twilight
  • Chant "Om Namah Shivaya"

✅ Do

  • Worship in the pradosh kaal (twilight after sunset)
  • Offer bilva leaves to Shiva
  • Keep the mind calm and inward

🚫 Avoid

  • Avoid grains if fasting
  • Avoid missing the twilight worship window

Fasting guidelines

A day fast is kept and broken after the evening twilight worship; many eat only fruits and milk.

Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Pradosh Vrat

The twilight pause of Pradosh mirrors the Gita's discipline of regulated practice and meditation at the day's junctures (6.10–14) — withdrawing the senses and steadying the mind toward the divine.

Let the yogi constantly steady the mind, dwelling in solitude, self-controlled, free from desire and possession.
Bhagavad Gita 6.10
As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker — such is the disciplined mind of a yogi absorbed in the Self.
Bhagavad Gita 6.19
