मुहूर्त

What is Muhurat?

A muhurat is an auspicious window of time chosen for important actions — and also a unit of time of about 48 minutes.

Muhurat explained

Muhurat has two related meanings. As a unit, a muhurta is 1/30th of a day — roughly 48 minutes; the day from sunrise to sunrise holds 30 muhurtas. As a practice (Muhurta, electional astrology), it is the art of choosing the most auspicious time to begin something important.

Choosing a muhurat weighs the tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana together, along with planetary positions, to find a window when the heavens favour success.

Some muhurats are universally auspicious: Brahma Muhurta (about 96–48 minutes before sunrise) is ideal for meditation and study; Abhijit Muhurat (around solar noon, ~48 minutes) is favourable for most undertakings. Others, like Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal, are inauspicious and avoided.

Spiritual significance

Brahma Muhurta — the still hour before dawn — is prized for sadhana: the mind is calm, the world is quiet, and the veil between the seen and unseen feels thin. To rise and meditate then is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines.

Why it matters in daily life

Muhurats are chosen for weddings, housewarmings (griha pravesh), starting a business, buying property or vehicles, naming ceremonies and travel. Daily Panchang lists the day's auspicious and inauspicious windows.

The Bhagavad Gita connection

The Gita exalts the disciplined practitioner who is awake to the Self when the world sleeps — the very spirit of rising in Brahma Muhurta for practice.

What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the disciplined; and what is waking for them is night for the seer.
Bhagavad Gita 2.69
